How to Establish Proper Social Relationships in Dogs' Minds

Puppies should receive good social relationship training early on. This social relationship training includes learning how to get along with other dogs and correctly understanding their position within the family.

The disadvantages of lacking social relationship training:

  1. Unable to communicate with peers. Puppies that do not interact with other dogs during their early stages do not understand the language of their peers, often misinterpreting other dogs’ intentions, which may cause extreme timidity when seeing other dogs. This timidity mostly manifests as aggressive behavior, making the dog more combative!

  2. Strong desire to dominate, not adapting to family life. In a dog’s social structure, there is no equality. When dogs were wolves, the wolf pack had a very clear hierarchy, a concept that has persisted in the dog's social behavior today. Dogs with a strong desire to dominate will use various methods to establish their status. Living among humans who love them, they may also try to control everything their owner does, becoming unsuitable for family life.

How to establish good social relationships for dogs?

The most important time to build social relationships is when the puppy is three to four months old. This period is very conflicted; on one hand, dogs have just completed two immunization shots and are awaiting a booster, so it’s best to avoid contact with other dogs. On the other hand, building social relationships requires more contact with other dogs. The solution is for the owner to invite some healthy, well-immunized, and gentle puppies to visit the home to help establish good social relationships for their puppy.

How to help dogs better adapt to family life?

Owners should teach dogs to accept affection from a very young age. They should also invite dog friends the dog likes to visit, helping the dog learn to face strangers correctly. The dog should not show any aggressive tendencies nor try to control the owner’s behavior; for example, the dog should not decide when to play. If it brings you toys to play, do not entertain it just because it’s cute, as this will increase its desire to dominate!

Methods dogs use to establish dominance in the family

A: Showing sulky or sad expressions when not getting the owner’s attention

B: Barking and taking away objects that attract attention

C: Nudging your hand for petting, scratching the floor, dog bed, sofa, sheets, etc.

D: Clinging to or leaning against you

E: Being ungrateful to the owner and ignoring the owner’s commands

  F: Sitting on the owner’s lap;

How to conduct proper psychological demotion training

*If the dog tries to sleep in the bedroom or any other place you don’t want it to, immediately forbid it from staying there

*When walking through a room, make your dog move aside; don't walk around it

*Do not give any treats when the dog hasn’t done any training or behavior worthy of reward

*Take away all toys, balls, chew items, etc. Only bring them out when you want to play

*Stop petting your dog aimlessly; all affection should be earned through effort

*Do not let the dog pass through doorways ahead of you. If it tries to squeeze in front, firmly close the door. Make sure not to trap the dog. You can slam the door several times daily to teach it to wait, learning that it’s only safe and allowed to be behind you.

*When you prepare food or cook, teach your dog to wait quietly and understand it can only eat after the owner finishes. Do not give food due to begging, jumping, or barking.

*When you watch TV, read, or use the internet, don’t pet or stop what you’re doing because the dog crowds you. Ignore it. The lead wolf never pays attention to the pleas of lower-ranked pack members.

*When necessary, use a leash and collar to enforce obedience. For example, if the dog refuses to leave the living room, use the leash to remove it or even tie it elsewhere. (Source: PetsZone)
