Dog External Parasite Treatment

Dogs have more opportunities to contact the outside world compared to other pets, and they really enjoy playing in places like grass, which increases their chances of parasite infection. Generally, dogs have relatively long fur, so even if parasites are on them, we basically will not notice. Therefore, it is very important to regularly perform external parasite treatment for dogs, but there are many precautions we need to pay attention to.

1. Why Treat Parasites

Parasites exist both on and inside dogs, and there are many kinds. The presence of parasites seriously affects dogs’ health, and severe parasitic diseases can greatly reduce their quality of life. In addition, many parasites can infect us as well, so not only for the dog but also for our own health and safety, we should regularly deworm our dogs.

2. Types of Parasites

External parasites are divided into those on the skin surface and those within the skin.

External skin parasites: ticks, lice, fleas, etc.

Internal skin parasites: mites

All these parasites cause itching problems for dogs. Many dogs scratch the affected area too much due to itching, causing wounds and secondary infections, leading to other related problems. Moreover, dogs may show symptoms such as lethargy, irritability, and poor appetite because of this.

How to Correctly Perform External Parasite Treatment for Dogs

Generally, parasite treatment can start when the dog is one month old. External parasite treatment can be done simultaneously with vaccinations and usually will not have any adverse effects. External parasite medications can be divided into spot-on treatments and sprays, and owners can purchase according to their needs.

Spray Usage Method

When using the spray medication, spray 10–20 cm away from the dog’s fur, lifting the fur against the grain to thoroughly wet the skin beneath. Then rub the sprayed area repeatedly to ensure the medication fully covers the skin and fur. Don’t forget to spray the dog’s abdomen, chest, neck, tail, and feet. Also, be careful not to spray directly into the dog’s eyes. For the dog’s face, it’s best to spray on a soft cloth first, then wipe the dog’s face. Allow the dog’s coat to air dry naturally—do not use a blow dryer or towel to dry, to achieve the best effect.

Spot-on Usage Method

Compared to sprays, spot-on treatments are more convenient to use. First, part the hair on the dog's neck to expose the skin. Then apply the spot-on medication in two spots or along a line. The medication will be gradually absorbed by the skin, affecting the whole body. Usually, after 24 hours, the medication starts taking effect by killing the parasites. The reason for applying medication on the dog’s neck is to prevent the dog from licking it because these topical medications can be irritating and licking may cause vomiting.

Typically, external parasite treatment can be done once every three months. However, if you rarely take your dog outside and maintain good hygiene, you may extend the time between treatments. Still, do not stop treating your dog just because you think hygiene is good enough. If your dog actually gets infected with parasites, it will be much more troublesome later.
