How to Conduct Simple Training for Dogs

Dog training should begin when puppies are two to three months old. Owners should have love and patience, letting the puppy understand that the owner’s commands must be absolutely obeyed. Sometimes when the puppy is disobedient, it needs physical punishment. You can roll up a newspaper into a stick shape and strike both sides of the dog’s mouth. Punishment should not be excessive, or the puppy will develop fear and behave timidly all day. When the puppy obeys, you can stroke its body gently with your hand and praise and encourage it enthusiastically. Use consistent verbal commands to train the dog to perform actions. Dogs judge the owner’s intentions by tone. Therefore, to let the dog understand the same meaning, different commands should not be used, or the puppy will be unable to distinguish.

If every family member disciplines the dog according to their own preferences, the dog will feel confused and at a loss. If the whole family disciplines the dog, they should discuss beforehand and agree to use uniform actions and commands, so the dog can fully remember each task. Generally speaking, pay attention to the following points:

  1. Let the dog remember the unified set commands, so it will act when it hears them.

  2. Let the dog see the sign of the action. For example, raise the right index finger and point to the ground, then shout the command to sit, prompting it to take a sitting posture.

  3. Or use stimulus methods. For example, lightly tap the dog’s waist to make it sit.

  4. Sentences should be short, and gestures should be simple. For example, shout "Wait", covering the dog's mouth with your palm; shout "Give me", reaching your hand near the dog’s mouth to have it place the item in your palm. (Source: PetsZone)
