1 Selection Characteristics
The pug’s characteristic is that it looks small but feels large, with a compact structure and good body proportions, and a clearly defined muzzle contour. Ideal weight range is 6~8.5 kg. The face is square-shaped. The head is large, heavy, and the forehead is not receding. The eyes are very large, prominent, and eye-catching, with very dark, spherical eyes full of calmness and desire, very bright, and passionate when excited. The ears are thin, small, soft, like black velvet. There are two ear types: rose ears (details) or button ears. The latter is more ideal. Wrinkles are large and deep. The muzzle is short, blunt, and broad but not upturned.
The bite should be a slight underbite. The neck is slightly arched, thick, with enough length for the head to be held proudly. The back is short with a level topline. The body is short and fat, chest broad and ribs well expanded. The tail curls as high as possible over the kidney area. Multiple curls are more ideal.

The legs are very sturdy, straight, of moderate length, positioned under the body. From the side, the elbows are below the shoulders. The wrists are firm, neither overextended nor drooping. The paws are neither long like rabbit feet nor round like cat feet. Toes are properly spaced with black nails. Dewclaws are usually removed. Strong hind legs with moderate angles at the stifle joint, and the hock is perpendicular to the ground. Viewed from behind, the legs are parallel. The rear quarters balance the forequarters.
The thighs and hips are full and muscular. The paws are the same as the front limbs. The coat is attractive, smooth, soft, short, and shiny, neither harsh nor woolly. Colors include silver, apricot yellow, or black. Silver or apricot yellow should be clear with strong contrast patterns against other colors and facial markings distinct. Muzzle, ears, ear edges, thumb spots, diamond patterns on the forelimbs, and back markings may be black. Facial color should be black.
