Dog Related Behavior Knowledge

Observing a dog's behavior is one of the main ways we interpret them. When we become familiar with what different actions dogs make and what they mean, we can better understand our dogs. Although at first we might be confused, with continuous exposure, we get to know dogs better and better.

  1. Why are dogs so close to humans?

This is possibly related to their domestication, as they have lived with humans for a long time and have a natural dependence on people.

  2. Why do dogs cause destruction when alone at home?

Dogs also feel lonely. When left alone at home, they often bark, chew, or relieve themselves out of fear or boredom. Some dogs like to gather items their owners have touched or used when left behind.

  3. How do dogs show friendliness?

When dogs greet their friends (humans or other dogs), they display a smiling mouth turned backwards, gentle eyes, ears tilted back, and a curling tongue. They wag their tails excitedly and may even rub against us.

  4. Why do dogs who wag their tails also bite?

We must note that wagging tails do not always mean the dog is happy. Before approaching a tail-wagging dog, we should also observe its facial expressions and other related behaviors.

  5. Is a dog crawling wanting to jump up and bite?

When inviting other dogs or humans to play, dogs perform a bowing gesture: front elbows on the ground with hips raised, a classic pose. Then they wag their tails, jump up and run away while looking back to see if the invitation has been accepted.

  6. Why do some small dogs provoke big dogs?

Sometimes it's because these dogs have dominant personalities, and some are timid but try to scare others off with their loudness.

  7. Why do dogs like to chase people?

Many dogs originally helped hunters catch prey, so they are interested in fast-moving objects. This is part of their nature. Other dogs might think we are playing with them, so when we run fast, they naturally chase us.

  8. Why do some dogs like to get themselves dirty?

Hunting instincts make them good at hiding their tracks, especially their scent. To do this, they cover themselves in foul-smelling substances. Once cleaned thoroughly by the owner, their urge to roll in another pile of stinky stuff becomes even stronger next time.

  9. Why do dogs like to sleep under tables, chairs, or beds?

Dogs are very alert, so they look for relatively enclosed spaces to sleep. Under tables, chairs, or beds gives them a greater sense of security.

  10. Why do dogs like to lick their owner’s mouth?

This originates from ancestral behavior. Dogs' ancestors used to bring food back in their stomachs to feed puppies. If this behavior received owner's attention, they would develop the habit of jumping up to lick their owner’s mouth from an early age.

  11. Why do dogs yawn?

Yawning is usually a sign of canine unease. For example, they may yawn when being scolded by the owner to relieve inner anxiety.

Understanding dog-related behaviors greatly helps us comprehend dogs. We can judge their emotions such as happiness or sadness through these behaviors, enabling better coexistence.
