Many people like to keep dogs, but dogs are also very fragile and can get sick just like humans. A friend said their poodle somehow got an ear disease, and the owner didn’t know what to do, worried whether the poodle’s ear disease was contagious, so now we will understand if dog ear diseases are contagious.
Dogs with ear diseases will not infect humans. If you feel a little discomfort, it should be psychological. Common ear diseases dogs may have include: otitis externa, otitis media, and ear mites.
Otitis externa is an inflammation of the external ear canal. Symptoms include extreme itching of the ear, dogs constantly shaking their heads, showing restlessness, frequently scratching ears with their paws, and there may be an unpleasant odor. Moreover, dogs may also suffer from fungal otitis externa, such as infections caused by penicillium, aspergillus, etc., which can lead to fungal otitis externa in dogs.
Dogs with ear diseases may have ear mites inside their ears. Healthy dogs’ ears appear light pink and have no odor. If the owner finds the dog frequently shaking its head, scratching ears with its paws, and there is a foul smell from the ears, it indicates possible otitis media or ear mites infestation. Ear mites in dogs can be treated by buying ear drops at the pet hospital. Dog ear mites are mainly caused by external parasites, which increase black secretions in the ear and cause itching symptoms.
Usually, through ear canal secretion examinations, if the results are accurate, treatment can start by using ear cleaning solutions specially made for dogs to clean the ear canal, then applying dog-specific ear drops. Generally, after one to two weeks of medication, the dog can recover. It is best to make the dog wear a protective cone during treatment to prevent scratching ears.
Dogs with ear diseases will not infect other dogs. When a dog has an ear disease, owners should spend more time accompanying their dogs, watching them carefully, and preventing the dog from scratching its ears, as this can affect recovery.
