Differences Between Bulldog and Boston Terrier
Bulldog

French Bulldog (detailed introduction) and Boston Terrier look very similar, and many people cannot tell which breed is which. Actually, it's not difficult to distinguish them by the following points.

Very Different Faces: Although both have square-shaped heads, proportionally, the French Bulldog's is larger. Moreover, the Boston Terrier looks younger because the French Bulldog has deep wrinkles between its eyes, while the Boston's face is flat. The French Bulldog appears to have a broader, "sexy" big mouth, while although the Boston's thick lips are impressive compared to many other dogs, it cannot surpass the French Bulldog's.

The most obvious difference is their ears. The French Bulldog has typical bat ears, spread apart catching the wind, while the Boston Terrier has distinctly erect ears, some even trimmed to stand upright at the sides of the head. If you look at their faces, you'll find the French Bulldog resembles an elderly gentleman, while the Boston Terrier is more like a young noble.

Flat versus Sloping Back: The Boston Terrier's back is short and flat, with a square body. The French Bulldog's waist is slightly higher than the shoulders, creating a back line that slopes upward toward the rear due to its rear legs being a bit longer than the front legs. However, no matter the shape, both dogs maintain overall balance regardless of flat or sloping backs.

Easiest to Differentiate is Coat Color: Distinguishing French Bulldogs and Boston Terriers by coat color might be one of the easier methods. All Boston Terriers have one main color accompanied by white markings. These main colors generally include brindle, black, and seal, and white markings always appear on the lips, between the eyes, and chest. Ideally, white extends through the head, neck, chest, with the lower parts of all four legs below the hocks also white. French Bulldogs mainly have solid colors, such as solid brindle, solid fawn, or solid white... However, solid black, mouse color, liver, black and tan, black and white are disqualifications. There is also a color that easily causes confusion with the Boston Terrier, which is brindle with white. If you do meet a French Bulldog with brindle and white, you can distinguish it by its bone structure and face.

A Receding Silhouette: When running, Boston Terriers have steady steps, a clear rhythm, and graceful strength. French Bulldogs perhaps inherit more from their ancestor the English Bulldog, adopting a double-tracked movement pattern where the left and right limbs never come close, but still move freely and strongly without restraint. You might not have to look anywhere else; perhaps just by watching their departing backs, you can tell them apart.
