　　Originated in the 19th century. Although an English dog, it was bred from two American breeds, the Labrador and the Newfoundland. The Flat-Coated Retriever has been a trusted assistant for European and American fishermen for hundreds of years. With their development and refinement, even musketeers found them very capable. The Flat-Coated Retriever evolved from a special type of retriever bred from Newfoundland dogs, setters, sheepdogs, upland game dogs, and other water dogs. The ultimate goal of this crossbreeding was to create a dog capable of easily locating, swimming to, and retrieving waterfowl. By the mid-19th century, this crossbreeding produced the precursor to the Flat-Coated Retriever — the Curly-Coated Retriever. By 1900, dog breeders considered curly coats poor for waterproofing and began breeding flat-coated dogs, which we now know as the Flat-Coated Retriever. In 1915, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Flat-Coated Retriever. They did not develop well during the world wars and were almost extinct by the 1940s. Then, an expert named Stanley O’Neal dedicated himself to reviving the breed. By the late 20th century, the Flat-Coated Retriever finally saw a bright future. Despite many excellent hunting skills, the Flat-Coated Retriever has not become a widely popular pet.
