Characteristics of Dog Sleep

Bedlington Terrier (detailed introduction)
Sleep helps us restore energy, so sufficient sleep time is necessary, and it is the same for dogs. However, dogs’ sleep characteristics are quite different from ours. We usually sleep continuously from night until morning, but dogs sleep intermittently. They do not sleep for long periods at once, but rather in broken intervals, because they have strong alertness.
Dogs’ sleep habits differ from humans. As long as the home is quiet, dogs will sleep. Therefore, even if they do not sleep at night, it does not matter. They have their own schedule and will sleep whenever they want to sleep. Forcing them is useless, and owners need not worry about it. Dogs generally are in a light sleep state and will wake up with the slightest noise. When lightly sleeping, dogs lie down with their heads between their two front paws, often with one ear close to the ground. During deep sleep, they usually lie on their side, fully stretched out, and are not easily awakened. Sometimes they make sounds in their sleep, such as light barking or moaning, accompanied by twitching of the limbs and gentle shaking of the head and ears. Throughout the entire sleep process, dogs are not easily awakened by familiar people or owners but remain sensitive to unfamiliar sounds.
It can be seen that the characteristics of dog sleep are quite different from ours, so we cannot force them according to our own schedule. Dogs usually sleep about 15 hours a day. If they do not get enough sleep, their energy will decrease. Therefore, it is best not to disturb them when they do not want to get up during sleep.
