For Border Collies, owners usually think the best thing for them is to feed them meat because dogs, whether big or small, love to eat meat. Moreover, meat is nutritious and makes dogs healthier, but at what age can they start eating meat?

Border Collies that are too young are not suitable for feeding meat, as it can cause indigestion, constipation, or diarrhea. If owners want to feed puppies meat, it is recommended to wait until the Border Collie is over 2 months old, and the meat must be cut into very small cubes. Also, feeding only meat can cause nutritional imbalance, so grains, meat, and vitamin-rich vegetables should be properly combined. Additionally, some vegetables are not suitable for Border Collies, such as onions, scallions, garlic, and chives, and should not be fed. Some strongly stimulating foods like chili peppers and cilantro should also be avoided.

From a canine nutrition perspective, raw meat (especially raw bones) is best for Border Collies as it does not undergo high-temperature cooking or other artificial processing (like dog food production), effectively preserving the food's original nutrients and trace elements. Therefore, feeding raw food is more advocated abroad (if owners have the time and conditions). However, food hygiene and safety are indeed concerns domestically, and in families with children, there is a risk of Toxoplasma infection, so cooked food may be more appropriate and reasonable. Border Collies can eat chicken, duck, pork, beef, fish, and shrimp, but when feeding meat, bone consumption should be avoided, and organ meats should not be given in excess.

So, meat is definitely good overall; it’s just that very young Border Collies are not suitable for meat feeding and should be at least over 2 months old. Feeding meat too early can actually harm the dog, and owners need to understand this.
