A Comprehensive List of Essential Supplies for Raising Dogs
Golden Retriever
New dog owners, take a look at what essential supplies are needed at home when you bring home a new dog?
1. Using Collars and Leashes
When taking your dog for a walk, always use a collar and leash. It is important to get your puppy used to wearing a collar early on. Leashes are made from leather, canvas, nylon, or chains, and the end should have a clasp that is easy to use and won’t slip off the collar.
2. Dog Feeding Tools
Feeding dishes should be sturdy, easy to clean, and not easy to tip over, such as stainless steel bowls, aluminum bowls, or iron bowls. The size and shape of the dish depend on the dog’s size and build. Flat-faced breeds should use shallow dishes; for breeds with long ears, since their ears might dip into the food or water and get dirty, deep bowls are better so they can extend their mouth and nose inside.
3. Preparation of Grooming Tools
Include brushes, combs, scissors, hairdryers, soap, and detergents. Pig bristle brushes are ideal—long-haired dogs benefit from medium-hardness longer brushes; short-haired dogs use shorter, stiffer brushes. Metal combs are best; coarse-tooth combs for rough-haired dogs; fine-tooth combs for fine-haired dogs. Scissors are used to trim paws and fur. Soap and detergents are used to bathe the dog.
4. Providing Toys for Play
Dogs have habits of carrying and chewing things, so toys that are not easy to swallow, not easily broken, and hairless, such as sticks and balls, should be prepared according to the dog’s preference. These toys are very useful during training.
5. Other Common Items
Prepare commonly used disinfectants, nail and fur trimming scissors as needed. Also keep medical cotton, gauze, disinfectants, 30% tincture of iodine, gentian violet solution, and antibiotic ointments on hand. Some dog owners also dress their show dogs in clothes and hats when going out to keep them warm.
