5 Key Points for Training Alaskan Malamutes
Alaskan Malamutes
The Alaskan Malamutes are gradually growing up. Besides their daily feeding, owners also need to pay attention to training their Alaskan Malamutes. Below are 5 common training key points for Alaskan Malamutes. Mastering these five skills will make training your Alaskan Malamute much easier.
Steps/Methods
1. First, owners must be patient when training; otherwise, Alaskan Malamute puppies can easily develop aversion.
Unlike especially intelligent dogs like Golden Retrievers, many training skills for Alaskan Malamutes rely on repetitive memory, so owners must be patient when training puppies, never rushing or setting too high demands. Especially, getting angry and scolding or hitting an Alaskan Malamute is absolutely unacceptable.
2. When training an Alaskan Malamute, always remember to put on a safety leash.
When going outside or training in public places, always remember to put a collar or leash on your dog. This avoids the Alaskan Malamute getting frightened during training, biting others; and also prevents them from being hit by other vehicles.
The collar should neither be too tight nor too loose; too tight affects breathing, too loose may slip off. It is best to allow some degree of freedom.
3. Alaskan Malamutes should have a certain amount of exercise daily.
Training should be persistent and long-term; don’t be enthusiastic for two days and then rest for half a month. The amount of exercise varies depending on the breed, age, and individual dog. For example, small Alaskan Malamutes should exercise around 3-4 kilometers daily, while adult Alaskan Malamutes can run about 4-16 kilometers daily.
Two points to note: before going out for training, owners should let their dogs exercise freely for a few minutes to relieve themselves. Also, during exercise, maintain correct walking posture, keep a suitable distance from the owner, and correct forward, backward, left, or right walking habits.
4. Don’t train Alaskan Malamutes on a fixed single route.
Daily training for Alaskan Malamutes should not follow the same fixed route. Along the way, prevent the dog from sniffing other dogs’ feces or objects, and never allow them to make contact with these.
Also, avoid bringing Alaskan Malamutes to places crowded with people or other dogs to prevent disease transmission.
5. Good daily training activities for Alaskan Malamutes
Some activities are beneficial for Alaskan Malamutes, such as swimming in summer, which helps develop a well-proportioned physique. Or letting the dog sprint and jump obstacles in an open area is also good—it promotes good shoulder structure and especially front chest development.
Bicycle leash pulling is also a good exercise for Alaskan Malamutes; this activity can effectively train the dog's joint flexibility and agility. (Source: PetsZone)
