What to Do If Cats Stay Up and Meow at Night
Oriental Shorthair Cat
Almost all cats have a very bad habit called "nocturnality." Being active at night is a habit cats cannot change. Some cats, after staying with their owners for a while and undergoing certain training, may break this habit. However, many newly raised cats have very serious nocturnal tendencies; they become energetic at night and keep meowing nonstop. What should the owner do at this time?
1. The Living Habits of Cats
Everyone knows the nickname "night owl." Actually, friends who understand cats' living habits should know that although cats are active during the day, they tend to be more active at night. That is why they are called "night owls." This nocturnal behavior is related to their long-term habits. Therefore, even if cats live with humans, their nocturnal activity habits cannot be changed quickly. Especially when cats rest enough during the day, they will be more energetic at night. To expend this energy, cats entertain themselves by finding some interesting things to do. Jumping around the room, playing with toys—of course, during play, cats inevitably make some noise, which can easily disturb the family’s normal rest and possibly affect neighbors' peace as well.
2. Cats in Heat Also Cause Nighttime Disturbances
Besides their living habits causing cats to be active at night, cats in heat may also be restless and noisy at night. Every spring and autumn, we can always hear feral cats meowing at night in the neighborhood, disturbing people’s sleep. This situation is also a normal physiological reaction of cats. Cats in heat call out to attract mates to complete mating and reproduction. Although cats are kept completely indoors, it does not affect their heat cycle. Once the mating season arrives, cats will howl, and if they hear other cats, they become even more aggressive.
