What Medicine to Give Cats for Diarrhea? Choose According to the Cause

If a cat has diarrhea, the owner must first understand the cause because different causes require different targeted "medicines." This ensures the fastest and most effective results. Next, let's look at various causes.

① Indigestion

This is the most common cause of diarrhea problems. Especially for kittens under six months old, if it is simple indigestion—soft stools. First, try changing the food. Because kittens have a very delicate stomach and a weak digestive system compared to humans, they have far fewer digestive enzymes. Therefore, they should not eat human food. Kittens under three months should not eat canned food or all-meat diets, as this can easily cause indigestion. Check the food ingredients; if there are components that cats cannot eat, stop using them and switch to easily digestible foods like goat milk or porridge for kittens. Also, administer Lactase Enzyme Tablets (two tablets at a time), three times a day, and the condition should return to normal in a few days. If necessary, you can also withhold food for one or two days to allow the stomach to recover. But never let the cat eat nothing at all.

Secondly, pay attention to keeping warm. During seasonal transitions, especially in autumn and winter when the temperature drops significantly, many cats develop diarrhea. In fact, if the cat’s mental state and appetite are normal, it could just have caught a chill. Owners should enhance the cat's warmth and adjust its diet. The problem will improve in a few days.

② Gastroenteritis

If the cat has diarrhea along with poor mental state and a significant fever, it might have gastroenteritis (feline distemper). If the cat has already received preventive treatment, owners can treat it at home. Buy common gentamicin injections at a pharmacy and give twice daily. Half an hour after the gentamicin injection, give probiotics to aid digestion.

③ Parasite Issues

First, go to the hospital for a stool test, and then use targeted medication. This may require injections and oral medicine. If parasites cause the diarrhea, there will be obvious blood streaks in the stool. Therefore, it is recommended to deworm household pets every three months to prevent this from happening.
