A cat's ears are like small triangles, often moving a bit, flapping in a playful way. Most cats' ears have a small pocket-like thing, which plays a significant role for the cat. It can change the trajectory of sound to improve the cat's detection of high-frequency sounds, so as to better listen to and distinguish sounds produced by various animals. It is precisely because of this structure that cats have extremely high resolution in distinguishing sounds. They can even hear some sounds that human ears cannot, such as the sound of mice moving.

In the past, my grandmother's family raised a kitten, with soft and loose black and white fur. The pair of triangular little ears would move from time to time, even when the cat was comfortably sleeping in the sunlight with eyes half-closed. Although cats often appear lazy and sleepy, seeming unable to wake up no matter what, their ears never miss any sound. I remember once there was a mouse rummaging through things on our roof, looking for food. I was still searching around, but the cat somewhere heard the sound. Before I even reacted, it had come running from somewhere, rushing up the beam chasing the mouse back and forth.

Watching the mouse run into a hole, it paced beside the entrance with its padded paws, occasionally raising its ears to listen to sounds inside the hole, and measuring the hole’s distance with its whiskers. If it saw the mouse did not come out for a long time, it would quietly leave and then lie in ambush not far away, silently waiting for the mouse to dart out so that it could suddenly pounce and kill it. Sometimes the mouse would cheat, like a crafty rabbit having many holes — entering through one hole and running out of another, thinking it was unnoticed by the cat. But as soon as it started moving, the cat would suddenly appear in front of it and strangle it.
