Training Pet Cats to Jump High and Through Hoops
Place a metal ring or other hoop-shaped object upright on the ground. The owner stands on one side of the hoop and the stands on the opposite side, both facing the hoop. The owner continuously issues the "jump" command while beckoning the cat to come over. The cat may pass through the hoop, and should be immediately rewarded with food. If the cat goes around the hoop instead, no reward is given, and the owner gently scolds it. Through repeated training like this, the cat will smoothly walk through the hoop upon the owner's call, and each time it does so, a reward should be given. Then raise the hoop slightly; initially, it should not be too high. The owner again issues the "jump" command, and if the cat jumps through, immediately give a tasty food reward. Repeat until the cat can easily jump through the hoop.
Next, raise the hoop higher, and continue to reward the cat with food each time it jumps through. Finally, train the cat to jump through a hoop 30 to 60 centimeters above the ground without food rewards. After the cat masters hoop jumping, occasional food rewards should be given when it jumps, to prevent extinction of this conditioned response. With proper training, the cat's hoop-jumping movements will be relaxed, agile, and adorable.
