Tips for Training Cats Not to Scratch Furniture
Russian Blue Cat
After waking up, cats often stretch and then exhibit scratching behavior. Based on these habitual actions, corresponding measures can be taken for training. Before training, prepare a wooden post about 70 cm tall and approximately 20 cm thick, firmly fixed near the cat's resting area to facilitate scratching. The wood should be solid.
Training should start from kittenhood. During training, bring the kitten to the wooden post, hold the cat’s front legs with both hands, and place it on the post to simulate scratching. This allows secretions from the cat’s paw glands to be deposited on the post. After multiple sessions, combined with the attraction of the scent, the cat will begin to scratch the post. Developing this habit will prevent the cat from scratching furniture, thus protecting the furniture’s cleanliness and appearance.
For cats who have already developed the habit of scratching furniture, cover the scratched areas with plastic or wooden boards first during training. Place a sturdy wooden post or board appropriately near the scratched area. Use the same method to train the cat to scratch on the post or board. Once the habit forms, gradually move the post or board to your desired location. Each move should be small, about 5 to 10 cm; haste is not advisable. (Source:PetsZone)
