Techniques for Training Pet Cats to Carry Objects in Their Mouths
Shandong Lion Cat
Training your beloved to carry objects can make it fetch items you throw, just like a dog, which is very fun. First, put a collar and leash on your cat to control its behavior during training. Hold a small plush toy or other items your cat likes, and say to the cat: “bite”. If the cat does not bite, you can open its mouth and gently place the toy inside. As long as the toy is not too large, cats generally will carry the toy in their mouths, at which point you should immediately reward the cat appropriately with food.
At the same time, use this method to train the cat to understand the command “release”. Whether the cat correctly performs the biting or releasing action, reward it with food and gently stroke its back to reinforce the training results. Once the cat has mastered the “bite” and “release” commands, you can start playing games with it by throwing a small toy in front of the cat, then pointing at the toy and telling the cat to “bite”. If the cat does not understand at first, you may lead the cat on leash to the toy and call it to bite.
After the cat carries the toy, immediately step back a few steps and call the cat to come. When the cat brings the toy back, tell it to “release”. Since the cat already understands the “release” command, it will usually obediently put down the carried item. Once the goal is achieved, immediately reward the cat with food and stroke it. After repeatedly training for 2-3 weeks, the cat will be able to fetch the items you throw according to your commands. Upon successful training, you can remove the collar and leash from the cat.
