Teach Cats the Skill of Scratching Wooden Posts

Persian Cat
The tip of a cat’s claw has a hook and is very sharp. Cats have a habit of scratching and clawing objects. Indoor cats often use the edges and corners of wooden furniture as scratching objects, which not only affects indoor tidiness but also damages the furniture. Therefore, it is necessary to train and teach cats to scratch scratching boards or wooden posts, which satisfies the cat’s natural needs while protecting the furniture from damage.
Training cats to scratch wooden boards or posts must start when they are young. The method is to place the wooden post or board where the cat can easily see it, allowing the kitten to climb up and down and find the part it is willing to scratch. If it does not scratch, the owner can gently stroke the cat’s head by hand and press down its head to force it to scratch the wooden post. After scratching, the glands on the cat’s paws secrete fluids that stick to the scratching area. Due to the smell of the secretion attracting the cat, it will go to the wooden post to scratch.
Cats have the habit of scratching immediately after waking up. Therefore, the wooden board or post should be placed near the cat’s nest. Cats are selective about scratching materials; they do not like to scratch soft wood but prefer solid wood. Practice has shown that wrapping a layer of carpet on the wooden board makes cats more willing to scratch. Once the cat develops the habit of scratching wooden boards or posts, to keep the room tidy, the wooden board or post can be fixed to the wall near the cat’s nest. (Source:PetsZone)
