I don’t know how your cats usually use the toilet at home. Not all cats will obediently find the toilet without training. Many cats surely urinate and defecate anywhere in the house, making it stink. Owners grit their teeth in frustration every time but have no choice but to clean up the mess. Over time, for cats that repeatedly refuse to improve, owners can only lock them up and then release them to play after the toilet is cleaned.

From the very first day your cat steps into the house, you should start training it to use the toilet. The earlier the training, the better the results. Set up a cat toilet in places like hallways or balconies the cat can freely enter and exit. When a cat unfamiliar with a new home urgently needs to go, it will be restless; this is a great opportunity for toilet training.

  1. Training the cat toilet

Cats are very intelligent animals and love cleanliness. They naturally excrete in fixed locations, so training a cat to use the toilet is very easy. If your home has a squat toilet, simply remove the litter box and tie the cat near the squat toilet. In two or three days, the cat can be taught to defecate in the squat toilet. For 3- to 4-month-old kittens just arriving home, paying attention to their excretion behavior can usually teach them in just one try. For western-style sit-down toilets, the training takes a little longer. You can gradually move the litter box toward the sit-down toilet and place it securely inside the toilet. Gradually reduce the amount of litter daily until the box is removed. Be patient and encouraging; the entire training process takes about half a month. Once successful, you will feel a rush of relief and excitement.

However, when initially putting the cat on the prepared special toilet, it may try to climb out several times. Do not lose heart. Softly tell it, "The toilet is here," and repeatedly place litter or tissues smelling like cat feces into the toilet. When the cat smells its own scent, it will feel secure. After the cat successfully relieves itself, don’t forget to warmly praise it, "Good job." Repeating this training will be very effective, and some cats even specifically come back home to use the toilet.
