Mosquitoes Easily Cause Heartworm Disease in Cats
American Curl Cat
Cat heartworm is a parasitic disease that lives in the cat’s heart and large blood vessels. The worms are thin, thread-like, and pale white in color. Besides infecting dogs and cats, heartworms can also infect wolves, foxes, and other wild carnivores; even some immunocompromised humans may possibly be infected. Cats have stronger resistance to heartworms than dogs, so clinically the infection rate in cats is lower than in dogs.
From the heartworm’s growth and development process, we can see that mosquitoes play a very important role. Heartworms must spend a certain period inside mosquitoes to develop into infective larvae. At the same time, mosquitoes are the main culprits in spreading heartworms. Without mosquitoes, heartworms are like missiles without fuel, losing their power.(Source:PetsZone)
