Methods to Train Persian Cats to Stop Scratching Furniture
Persian cats are lively and active animals. They are certainly adorable, but sometimes their mischief causes quite a bit of trouble for their owners. For example, some Persian cats love to scratch furniture and overturn things.
Taming sharp claws so cats no longer scratch furniture: Cats really like to use their paws to scratch objects, such as tree trunks or wooden items. Sometimes they also scratch on the floor. When cats scratch objects, they have this habit: they like to secrete a sticky, scented liquid. During the scratching process, this secretion is rubbed onto the scratched surface. The scent of these secretions attracts the cat to return to the same spot to scratch again. For indoor cats, if owners do not pay attention to training, damage to furniture and floors often happens.
Prepare a wooden post, standing fixed near the cat's bed, making it convenient for the cat to scratch. Bring the kitten in front of the wooden post, hold the cat's two front legs with both hands, and place its two front paws on the post to simulate the cat's scratching action. This way, the secretions from the cat's paw glands can be rubbed onto the post. After multiple training sessions, combined with the attracting scent of the secretion, the cat will go to the post to scratch and develop the habit. After that, the cat will no longer scratch the furniture.
For cats that have already developed the habit of scratching furniture, during training you should first cover the furniture surface being scratched with plastic boards or wooden boards. Then place a sturdy wooden post or wooden board in front of the scratched furniture at an appropriate position. Then train the cat to scratch on the post or wooden board using the method mentioned above. After the cat develops the habit of scratching the post or board, you can slowly move the post or board until it is in a suitable spot of your choosing.
These are the methods to train Persian cats to stop scratching furniture. Whether owners have mastered them or not, the methods are not difficult; owners just need to put a little more thought when implementing them.
