Let cats develop the habit of human contact

Persian Cat

【1. Let Cats Learn to Relax】

and becoming good neighbors depends on the cat’s personality. Relatively, cats are sensitive and timid, and not as fond of gatherings as dogs. They may get startled (mostly by themselves) or initiate challenges by making threatening sounds or even pawing at the dog’s head. Kittens are more accepting of dogs and may even love this silly big buddy. Puppies always like to make any possible playmates. The ideal situation is to introduce both puppies and kittens simultaneously. Adult cats that have lived with dogs before may also become good friends with adult dogs. Adult dogs usually can calmly face a kitten, but adult cats are less likely to accept a puppy easily. Owners should not expect an adult cat to actively play with a dog and must teach the dog to relax in this situation.

  【2. Choose the Right Partner】

Adult dogs with strong hunting instincts may pose a threat, so extra caution is needed when certain dog breeds live with cats. Large dogs once used for racing or hunting usually see small animals as prey. A trained from a young age to chase rabbits will likely struggle to coexist peacefully with cats. Dog breeds with flat faces and protruding eyes, such as Pekingese and , are also unsuitable to live with aggressive cats because their eyes are very vulnerable.

  【3. Control the Dog’s Behavior】

Dogs have a strong territorial sense. If a dog enters a home with cats, it will feel like it is intruding on the cat’s territory and thus be more respectful to the cat. When introducing a strange cat and dog, control the dog using a leash. If the cat is willing, let it sniff the dog’s scent, but don’t let the dog overpower the cat or force the cat to approach the dog. Pull the leash tight immediately if the dog gets too close. Reward the dog if it keeps its distance. Dogs must understand that keeping distance from cats is a house rule that must be obeyed.

【4. Provide an Escape Route for the Cat】

Usually, when cats are still, dogs also watch quietly. When a cat starts to flee, the dog then gets excited and chases. Attentive owners should arrange an escape path for the cat, such as the top of a cabinet or a small door that only cats can go through, and place the cat’s food bowl and litter box in high places or areas inaccessible to dogs. Smart cats feel more secure and tolerant when they know they have a safe retreat. Never let them chase each other outdoors, as traffic accidents or getting lost could bring irreversible tragedy.

Dogs are simple and honest, cats are clever and agile; they are both adorable spirits. Well-trained cats and dogs living under the same roof will definitely bring endless joy and warmth to your family life. (Source:PetsZone)
