How to Train a Cat to Use the Toilet: Important Methods and Tips
Himalayan Cat
1. First
The most important thing to remember is: the toilet lid must always be open, and the toilet seat must be down. Put a note on the back of the toilet lid to remind yourself, family members, and any visitors who might use the restroom. If you have a habit of closing the door right after using the toilet, you might need to change that.
2. Secondly
Training the cat to use the toilet should be done after the cat reaches adulthood. The first step in training is to move the litter box to one side of the toilet. Don't forget to let your cat know where the litter box has been moved to. Wait a while. Next, place something under the litter box (such as a bundle of old newspapers, a thick phone book, a cardboard box, etc.) to raise the litter box about 3cm. It's best not to use magazines because their glossy texture can make the litter box unstable, causing insecurity for the cat while relieving itself. If necessary, you can fix the litter box and the items used to raise it together with tape. Wait a while. Then find another box or phone book to raise the litter box a bit more. Wait a while. Continue this step until the bottom of the litter box is level with the top of the toilet seat (as for Misha, I raise her litter box about 6cm every day).
3. Additionally
At the beginning of this step, the cat needs to "step" into the litter box, then later will need to jump in, until one day it might jump onto the toilet seat for the first time, then step into the litter box on the toilet seat. Throughout the entire training process, you must always keep the toilet lid open, the toilet seat down, and your cat fully accustomed to walking around on the open toilet.
Lift the toilet seat ring and measure the inner and outer diameter of the toilet seat. Buy a metal basin with a diameter similar to the toilet. Do not use a plastic basin because the plastic is softer and cannot support the cat's weight; it may deform and tip over, spilling litter everywhere and scaring the cat even more.
The next step is to place the litter box on the open toilet lid. If your cat is not very comfortable, you may need to split this step into two parts: first put half of the litter box on the toilet, then after some time place the entire litter box on it. Remove everything that was previously under the litter box (newspapers, phone books, etc.).(Source:PetsZone)
