Methods and Techniques for Training Cats to Use Scratching Posts
Shandong Lion Cat
should start scratching post training as early as possible. Keep the cat in a room or enclosed environment where the interior is made of scratch-resistant materials as much as possible. In the room, place the cat’s bed, bowls, toys, and litter box, and install a scratching post near the cat’s bed that is appropriately sized, textured, and sturdy. The scratching post can be bought or homemade. Most cats prefer a scratching post that offers rebound resistance when pulling down and is wrapped with vertical rope fibers.
The scratching post can be placed against the wall or stand independently either vertically or horizontally, as long as it doesn't topple when the cat uses it. The post should be long enough to allow the cat to fully stretch. Some scratching posts have a mint scent, which can stimulate certain cats. Also, try encouraging the cat to rub its claws a few times on the post to leave scent marks from the sweat glands. Hanging a toy on a string near the post and moving it can entice the cat to play nearby.
When you see your cat scratching the post, give appropriate petting and praise. Once the cat becomes accustomed to using the scratching post in the enclosed environment, gradually expand the area to the entire home. Scratching is a marking behavior meant to leave messages; therefore, the scratching post must be placed in a prominent location where the cat can easily access it at any time. (Source:PetsZone)
