Is Human-Cat Conversation Really Feasible?

Technology always has its unique beauty, able to slowly turn some things we imagine into reality. For example, in the way owners and cats communicate, we usually can only carry out some very basic body language, which requires some proper training for the cat. Of course, we can also train cats with some verbal commands, but in this, we have not reached a level of mutual understanding or exchanging ideas; the cat is passively completing certain tasks. This form of communication is not very effective, so cat lovers must wish it would be wonderful if cats could truly converse with us. Recently, someone in the United States invented a voice app capable of translating human language and the language of meow stars, hoping to realize this wish for cat lovers.

This app claims to convert human language into cat language. By collecting 175 types of sounds (meows) from 25 cats, it enables communication between humans and cats or at least gains the cat’s attention.

The human-cat communicator analyzes human voice audio and reproduces cat sounds with a carefully altered voice based on your input. It currently supports all human languages. It also includes a soundboard with 16 types of cat calls that can instantly emit common cat calling sounds. It is available on both iOS and Android mobile devices.

The preset soundboard contains 8 different cats including long-haired cats, purring cats, kittens, as well as 8 types of sounds including bird calls and mouse noises. According to netizens’ reviews, this will be a very practical application for cat slaves and people who love cats in name only. Language is a medium of communication; since cats cannot speak human language, humans can take the first step. Using the human-cat communicator allows humans to avoid poor imitation of cat sounds and stop trying hard to guess what cats are thinking. People say this communicator "is very popular among all cats and dogs, making parties no longer lonely."

So what is the actual effect of using the human-cat communicator?

Many cat lovers have downloaded the software and tested it. Most think cats do not understand these "cat languages." Still, many netizens claim they have achieved barrier-free communication with cats through the app. Some speculate if the software only translates English.

According to some experienced cat slaves, the preset cat sounds may be too sharp, causing a sense of aggression in the test subjects, leading cats to avoid approaching. It’s also possible cats can understand but don’t have time to play, causing test failure. The human-cat communicator actually recognizes speech, converts it to text, translates it, converts it back to text, and finally outputs audio. Whether the "cat language" translated by software is correct cannot be known from a programming perspective.

In fact, cats living long-term with owners roughly understand the meaning of the owner’s voice, gestures, facial expressions. Also, since the software emits similar species’ sounds, cats may react with excitement, curiosity, or confusion. Of course, they might also show aggressive anger.

Adams is a volunteer at a stray cat adoption center in Nashville, Tennessee. One day she tried using a smartphone "cat language translation app" to talk with cats. From video clips, Adams can be seen telling the camera she is using the "cat language translation app," and then the phone emits cat sounds. Adams naturally doesn’t know what "cat language" the app "translates," but a nearby kitten approached after hearing the sounds. The kitten’s tail was raised, maintaining eye contact with Adams while sniffing her thigh, putting its left front paw down to support itself as it suddenly swiped at Adams with its right front paw. Adams waved the kitten’s attack away, laughing heartily with others present. Adams jokingly said the "cat language translation app" is useful but just causes unusual reactions from kittens.

Therefore, as the app instructions say, please don’t take these applications too seriously when using them. Although cats need human care and love, communication with animals is often humans enjoying themselves. Rather than scaring them with cat sounds, it’s better to give them more respect. If your pet cannot understand the translated cat language, try using it with your human friends to add some fun to communication.
