How to Train Your Cat to Be Different
In everyday interactions with cats, we gradually learn about the habits of the cats we keep, discover their interests, and slowly cultivate and train them to be more lovable and different. The various funny expressions and postures of cats fascinate us. Recently, a rolling cat from Japan has gone viral online. The cat presents a natural and relaxed posture in the photo collection, and its adorable look is captivating. This gives us inspiration that by training the cat’s natural instincts, it will display a unique appearance.
The so-called "rolling cat" is a cat that lies or reclines comfortably and freely. Most cats appearing in the photo collection are stray cats. Some roll around to relax, some squint their eyes into a line, stretching lazily. Sometimes they hold onto something tightly, sometimes they want to pounce on something, showing full cuteness. The photographer said, “Although we do not feed the cats during shooting, as long as we stay still, the cats will slowly approach you.”
Cats rolling around is also a common action we see at home. They often lie lazily or lie on their backs, then roll occasionally. This is mostly unconscious rolling by the cat. But if we want the cat to obey us, and to see it roll on command, we need to train it in time. The training is actually very simple. The owner first calls out “roll.” At the beginning, the cat definitely doesn’t react. At this time, you can gently press the cat’s back with your hand, pressing it down to make it roll. The cat may resist; don’t get impatient, be patient and try several times. When the cat obeys, give food rewards and gently stroke its back as praise. After multiple trainings, the cat will roll on the ground whenever it hears the “roll” command.
In the early training period, every time the cat rolls once, you can give some food the cat likes as a reward. Then gradually reduce the rewards and require the cat to roll multiple times before getting the reward until food rewards are completely stopped.
Rolling also has different meanings. When a cat rolls on the ground, sometimes it exposes its belly toward people or animals, meaning: “Come play the hunting game with me!” Dogs may interpret this as a fight game according to dog language and happily accept, leading to a new round of dog-chasing-cat games. If a female cat rolls in front of a male cat with her toes spread and claws stretched: it indicates that the female cat is not yet pregnant and continues to seek mating.
Secondly, when training cats to roll, the location is also something we need to pay attention to. For example, the Japanese rolling cats mentioned above were photographed outdoors on grass or sandy places. In these places, being closer to nature with fresher air is beneficial to the cat’s physical and mental health, making it naturally easier to pose adorably. Cats posing in human-like postures makes viewers feel "I might do that too." Although the subject is a cat, people still have a feeling; this is what makes cats bring us something different.
