How to Train a Cat to Fetch Items
Many dogs under their owner’s training help fetch things that are thrown, and cats can actually do this as well. As long as the owner patiently trains them, today we will teach everyone how to train a cat to fetch thrown items.
During training, first put a collar and leash on the cat to better control its behavior. Hold a small plush toy or other items the cat likes to play with in your hand, and say to the cat: “Bite it.” If the cat does not bite, you can gently open its mouth and forcibly put the toy inside. As long as the toy is not too big, the cat will generally hold the toy in its mouth, at which point you can immediately reward the cat with food.
At the same time, you can use this method to train the cat to understand the command “release.” Whether the cat correctly performs the bite or release action, it should be rewarded with food and petted on the back to consolidate the training effect.
Once the cat has skillfully mastered the commands “bite” and “release,” you can start playing games with the cat. Throw the small toy in front of the cat, then point to the toy and call the cat to “bite.” If the cat doesn’t understand at first, you can lead the cat to the toy and call “bite.” When the cat holds the toy in its mouth, immediately step back a few steps and call the cat to come over. When the cat comes holding the toy, call “release.” Since the cat now understands the “release” command, it will usually obediently drop the item being held. After achieving this, immediately reward the cat with food and pet it. (Source:PetsZone)
