How to Teach Cats and Dogs to Adapt to Brushing Teeth
Ragdoll Cat
Dental care is very important to your cats and dogs' health, just like it is for yourself. You should provide regular dental care and cleaning for your cats and dogs. First, you can train your pets to accept the habit of tooth brushing. Start by gently stroking your pets' gums with your finger. Initially, only wipe the outside, but when your pets have adapted to this behavior, you can open their mouths and clean the inside of their gums as well.
Once your pets are accustomed, you can wrap gauze around your finger to brush their gums. Then add some toothpaste specially formulated for cats and dogs; do not use human toothpaste. After several weeks of this, your pets will likely be happy to accept a pet toothbrush with soft bristles made of synthetic fibers. Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle between the teeth and gums, rotating small circles on the teeth. Then brush up and down to remove tartar in the gaps between teeth. Repeat these steps until the tooth surfaces are clean. Brushing the inside surfaces of teeth is more difficult because your pet will resist opening its mouth wide, but eventually, you should be able to brush both inside and outside surfaces of the teeth. Brush your cats' and dogs' teeth twice a week for a clean effect. (Source:PetsZone)
