How to Teach a Norwegian Forest Cat to Shake Hands with People?
Humans shake hands as a polite greeting when they meet. If you encounter a beautiful Norwegian Forest Cat that excitedly stands up and extends its paw signaling to shake hands with you, when you reach out your hand, you must be wondering how it did that. In fact, through scientific training, it can master the handshake skill in a short time.
The best way to teach a Norwegian Forest Cat to shake hands is to use food rewards. Before formal training, prepare some treats that cats like to eat. For example, beef jerky or dried fish slices. Then spread a bit of the food's flavor on your right fingers, stretch out your hand in front of the cat, and call it to come closer to you.
Hold the right hand covered with the food flavor in front of the cat's nose so it can smell the scent. At this moment, gently say to the Norwegian Forest Cat, "Shake hands, shake hands." At the beginning of the training, the cat won't understand the exact meaning of these commands. So the owner needs to teach the cat hand in hand to shake hands. When issuing the "shake hands" command, the owner should guide the cat to smell the finger aroma, let it stretch its head forward, then raise your hand even higher, teaching the cat to lift its paw. This allows the owner to naturally create a handshake situation with the cat, then lower the hand and give the prepared treat to the cat as a reward.
After a few days of training, the Norwegian Forest Cat will have a clear understanding of the "shake hands" command. When the owner issues the command and raises the right hand, the cat will actively approach and extend its paw to make a handshake gesture. Of course, after every successful training, the owner should reward the cat with treats or encourage it with petting to stimulate its enthusiasm for the next training session.
