How to Teach a Cat to Carry Things in Its Mouth
Every time you see other people’s dogs helping to fetch things, it’s quite enviable. Actually, cats can do this too! With patience and gradual training, you will see results one day!
Training your beloved cat to carry items can allow it to carry back things you throw like a dog, which is very fun. Begin training by putting a collar and leash on your cat to help control its behavior. First, hold a small plush toy or other item your cat likes to play with, and say to the cat: “Bite.” If the cat doesn’t bite, you can gently open its mouth and force the toy inside. As long as the toy isn’t too big, the cat will usually hold it in its mouth. You can immediately reward the cat appropriately with food.
At the same time, you can use this method to train the cat to understand the “Drop” command. Whether the cat does the correct biting or dropping action, always reward it with food and stroke its back to consolidate the training results. After the cat masters the commands “Bite” and “Drop,” you can start playing games with it. Throw the small toy in front of the cat, then point to the toy with a finger and tell the cat to “Bite.” If the cat doesn’t understand at first, you can lead it on the leash beside the toy and tell it to bite. Once the cat carries the toy, immediately step back a few steps and call the cat to come. When the cat brings the toy, call “Drop.” Because the cat already understands the “Drop” command, it will usually obediently release the item. Once the goal is achieved, immediately reward the cat with food and pet it. After repeating this training for 2–3 weeks, the cat can fetch items you throw based on the commands. After successful training, you may remove the collar and leash from the cat.
