Cats are naturally curious about everything and have agile movements, but sometimes these habits cause quite a bit of trouble at home. Cats jumping on tables and breaking vases, scratching furniture randomly, or jumping around wildly seriously affect family life. At this time, the owner must take a series of training steps so that the cat is no longer so naughty.

  I. Start training from kittenhood; correct mistakes immediately

  1. Cats must be corrected immediately at the scene of the mistake. Since most cat owners have to go to work, this may be difficult to do, which increases the difficulty of correcting the cat’s bad behavior.

  2. Training should begin in the cat’s early life. It is very difficult to correct a bad habit in an adult cat, while preventing it from the start is easier. However, with persistence, any cat can learn some simple behavioral rules.

  3. Training is best started within a few days after you bring the cat home. During training, carry a water spray bottle or a noise maker (coins in an aluminum can). Whenever the cat climbs onto chairs or scratches furniture, spray water at it or shake the noise maker beside it. If you cannot watch it, restrict its activity range before leaving home. Do not physically punish the cat; physical punishment will only make the cat fear its owner and lose trust.

II. Create a suitable environment; train happily

  1. Do not leave tasty or curiosity-arousing items on tables or chairs where the cat can find them. This encourages the cat to climb higher. If the floor is dirty or there are things or animals the cat fears, it will have no choice but to jump onto furniture.

  2. Please prepare a scratching post for your cat. The scratching post can be wrapped with a rough blanket or be a bare wooden stick, depending on the cat’s preference. You can also set up a sunny spot on the windowsill or somewhere higher where the cat can sunbathe and look outside. The cat’s greatest joy is sitting in the sun enjoying the scenery and safely exploring the outside world.

  3. When you are not home, you can take some auxiliary measures to help the cat reinforce good behavior. For example, wrap the areas of the furniture that were scratched with plastic bags or aluminum foil as a warning sign. You can also place the noise maker randomly on a chair; if the cat jumps on it, it will fall and make noise. When this happens, the owner should strengthen training after returning home.

  4. Praise the cat for good behavior. If the cat uses the scratching post you prepared or sits on the designated windowsill, immediately give reward treats and say praise words.

The key to training is to make the cat feel happy during the process of establishing good behavior. If the above methods don’t work, reconsider whether you have provided a living environment that suits your cat’s wishes and nature, and adjust accordingly. (Source:PetsZone)
