How to Stop Cats from Causing Damage at Home
Somali Cat
For cat owners, every caretaker must prevent cats from causing damage at home. Especially when cats are in heat, owners need to pay more attention, promptly stop destructive behavior, and take measures to prevent repeated damage. So for inexperienced owners, how can one stop cats from destructive behavior?
1. For pet cats, jumping high, scratching claws, and biting plants are all very normal and common behaviors. But for humans living with cats, all these behaviors are very destructive. They disrupt the normal order of family life and make the home messy and dirty. To ensure normal family life, these destructive behaviors of cats should be stopped.
2. Take scratching claws as an example. Besides sharpening old nails, claw marks are also a visual sign to let other cats or animals know this is their territory. Therefore, owners should provide a scratching board, firmly standing on the floor or leaning against the wall at a 45-degree angle.
3. Additionally, nails should be trimmed at least every two weeks. If cats are used to scratching sofas, cardboard, wood, rattan chairs, or leather items, you can prepare a spray bottle filled with clean water. Whenever the cat tries to scratch furniture other than the scratching board, spray it with water. After a few times, smart cats will understand that scratching furniture will lead to unpleasant punishment and switch to scratching the scratching board instead. Similarly, water sprays can train cats not to engage in other inappropriate behaviors.
4. Some cats like to climb on stoves or kitchen cabinets; some cats tend to urinate everywhere when in heat, which troubles owners. The solution: prepare a strong water spray. Observe the cat’s behavior a few meters away without letting it notice your surveillance. When the cat just climbs onto the stove or cabinet, or begins to prepare to urinate randomly, suddenly spray water at it—preferably hitting its head. The cat will be frightened and run away quickly. After two to three times, when you let the cat approach the sprayed area, it will struggle hard to escape, and your worries will be completely resolved. (Source:PetsZone)
