How to Cultivate the Habit of Cats Eating Well
Persian Cat
1. Develop the habit of fixed-time and fixed-place meals
If you want your cat to develop a good habit of focusing on eating, you must start from a young age by feeding the cat at set times and fixed amounts. Do not always keep food in the cat's bowl, as food left out for a long time loses taste and smell, causing waste. Encourage your cat to eat attentively by limiting mealtime to 30 minutes; if not finished, remove the food and only provide more at the next scheduled feeding. Do not let your cat develop bad habits like eating whenever it wants or expecting food to be available later, which can lead to pickiness. Imagine in summer, leftover food in the bowl can spoil easily, potentially causing gastroenteritis when the cat eats it later.
2. Develop the habit of eating in a fixed place
Some cats like to take food to a hidden “safe” corner when they find food they like, to avoid other cats or animals stealing it. Others carry food out of the dish to eat more comfortably. This is a bad habit: hidden corners are often hygiene dead zones, quite dirty, so food carried there may be contaminated; even if the home is clean, carrying food out will dirty that area. So once you see your cat hiding food, you must promptly stop this behavior by putting food back in the dish, or placing a clean sheet of paper (or plastic) near the dish for the cat to eat on. This way, the cat learns the place you provide is clean, safe, and convenient for feasting, preventing it from carrying food everywhere.
3. Develop the habit of small frequent meals and night snacks in summer
In hot summer weather, people’s appetite decreases, let alone cats wearing thick fur coats. The heat makes cats less inclined to eat, so adjust the feeding schedule accordingly by feeding smaller meals more frequently. Give a bit more at breakfast, less at lunch and dinner, and add a night snack before bed. For example: at about 7 AM when it's not hot, give a bit more; around noon at 12 PM, give a little; around 6 PM for dinner, give a little; and around 11 PM when the heat has fully subsided, give more so the cat eats sufficiently.
4. Do not give snacks or canned food arbitrarily
Snacks and canned food do not benefit cats’ health much and often contain additives and preservatives. Like children, cats should eat fewer snacks. Occasional treats once or twice are acceptable, but regularly giving snacks or canned food can cause the cat to become picky. Use snacks and canned foods only as rewards when the cat behaves well.
5. Improve the diet once or twice a week
Feeding only cat food cannot fully meet the cat’s nutritional needs. Once or twice a week, improve the diet by cooking some meat. It’s best to have a fixed day and time for cooking meat so the cat looks forward to a tasty meal on that day.
