Correcting Abnormal Feeding Behavior of Manx Tailless Cats
Abnormal feeding behavior in cats includes three types: polyphagia, anorexia, and pica. So what should we do? Let's find out today!
Polyphagia refers to a cat's excessive food intake leading to feline obesity. It can be managed by hunger therapy or food restriction therapy to reduce the cat's food intake and achieve normal status.
Anorexia is the lack of appetite in cats, manifested as refusal to eat certain or specific foods. Anorexia can cause unbalanced nutrition intake, resulting in functional disorders or dysregulation in the cat’s body, thus requiring medical treatment.
Pica is an abnormal feeding behavior characterized mainly by ingestion of non-food substances. For example, licking, chewing wool socks or woolen sweaters, or sneaking to eat indoor potted plants when the owner is away. Correcting pica can use aversive conditioning methods to create dislike, such as frightening punishments. You can use mousetraps or water spray guns for intimidation. Place the mousetrap upside down (to avoid trapping the cat) next to woolen clothing or plants; when the cat approaches, the trap snaps and makes a cracking sound, frightening the cat away. Alternatively, hold a water gun in hiding and spray the cat immediately when abnormal feeding behavior occurs. The cat will flee from the sudden attack. After several times, the cat can eliminate pica.
