Cats Biting Textiles Is a Self-Soothing Behavior
American Shorthair Cat
Some young like to hold textiles in their mouths, which may be a form of comfort for them. Most kittens have this habit, while some do not. However, those kittens who appear not to have this habit may not only like to bite these items but also very likely have swallowed them all at once.
For some reason, these cats seem to prefer wool products.
We do not know why, but it is quite common among Siamese and .
This phenomenon is also relatively common in cats weaned early (2-4 weeks). We are not sure if early weaning necessarily causes this habit, but it might be somewhat related.
Because swallowing textiles can cause very serious digestive diseases, we must try to prevent it. It is best to keep clothes in the cupboard and not let them access them.
If this habit has become serious enough that forced intervention is necessary, treatment with medication is required.
Some researchers have pointed out that giving them some cowhide toys might redirect their attention from clothes to toys. This is a method worth trying.
