Cat Training Has Techniques

Cats are noble and gentle, spending most of their time contemplating their lives quietly by their owners' sides, but there are some exceptions. Some cats are naughty and restless, doing many wrong things such as scratching furniture or urinating improperly. This requires our training to correct the cat's wrong behaviors. So how should we train cats?

  1. Start training from kittens; correct mistakes immediately

Cats must be educated immediately at the scene of the mistake. Because most cat owners must go to work, this may be difficult to do and adds difficulty to correcting the cat's bad behaviors.

Training should begin in the kitten stage. It is very difficult to correct bad habits of an adult cat, while preventing from the start is easier. However, with persistence, any cat can learn some simple behavioral rules.

Training is best started within a few days after bringing the cat home. During training, keep a water spray bottle or a noise maker (you can put some coins in an aluminum can). Whenever the cat climbs on chairs or scratches furniture, spray it with water or shake the noise maker beside it. If you cannot supervise it, restrict its activity area before leaving. Do not physically punish the cat; corporal punishment will only make the cat fear its owner and lose trust.

  2. Create a good environment, train without pressure

Do not leave tasty or curious items where cats can reach on tables or chairs. This encourages cats to climb high. If the floor is dirty or has things or animals that scare cats, they will have to jump on furniture to stay.

Please prepare a scratching post for your cat. The scratching post can be covered with a rougher blanket or be a bare wooden stick, depending on the cat’s preference. You can also set up a spot on the windowsill or another high place for the cat to sunbathe and watch the scenery. Cats’ greatest joy is sitting in the sun enjoying the view and safely observing the outside world.

When you are not home, you can take some auxiliary measures to help the cat reinforce good behavior. For example, wrap previously scratched parts of furniture with plastic bags or aluminum foil as warning signs. You can also place a noise maker randomly on a chair, so when the cat jumps up, it falls and makes a noise. After such an incident, the owner should strengthen training upon returning home.

Good behavior in cats must also be praised. If the cat uses the scratching post you prepared or sits on the designated windowsill, immediately reward it with treats and speak praising words. The key to training is to make the cat feel happy while establishing good behavior. If the above methods do not work, reconsider whether you are providing a living environment that suits your cat’s temperament and nature, and make targeted adjustments.

  3. Train your cat to come on call

Cats are very independent animals; it is difficult to make them obey tasks they dislike. But cats are also very rule-abiding. Once a rule is established, they will consciously follow it. Therefore, using this trait to train cats can make them obey many commands.

For example, to train your cat to "come," hold a piece of food the cat likes and stand opposite the cat, making the sound "come." When the cat walks over, let it eat the food and gently pat it to show praise. If the cat refuses to come, show it the food, then repeat the "come" command. After repeated training, just saying "come" will make the cat obey and come over even without food. Then advance the training by waving your hand when saying "come." When the cat comes, reward it. This will form a conditioned reflex. Later gradually wave your hand without making sounds; if the cat comes, continue rewarding food and affection. After some time, the cat will feel this is a rule: whenever the owner waves, the cat will quickly come.

Cats are not as obedient as dogs and do not think everything is the owner’s will. Cats have their own ideas and thoughts, so owners must not scold or hit cats during training. Cats may feel insulted and run away from home.
