Can the habit of cats roaming at night be corrected
Leopard Cat
Cats like nighttime activity, this is a fact that everyone knows. However, cats roaming at night can affect indoor hygiene, and wandering outdoors may impact health and pose a risk of getting lost. So, can the habit of cats roaming at night be corrected?
1. Correct night roaming starting from kittenhood
To correct a cat's night roaming habit, it must start from kittenhood. When beginning training, use a cage to tame the cat, letting it out during the day to move around indoors, but never outdoors. At night, catch it back in the cage. After a while, this will develop into a habit, and even without the cage, the cat will not roam at night.
2. Mild sedative medication
If it is really difficult, you can sedate the cat with medication at night, and use a small amount of stimulant during the day. It won't take long before the night roaming habit is corrected. Also try to avoid letting the cat outdoors for extended periods or free access, as this may cause the bad habit to relapse.
3. Make the cat feel attached to home
An enclosed porch or a part of a window extending outward is a good safe place for cats to communicate with nature. If your yard has a fence, another good method is to install a net on the fence, keeping the cat within your yard. During the day, you can train the cat to take walks using a leash, but make sure to use the lightest retractable leash connected to a chest harness, not a collar. Let your cat get used to wearing the harness indoors, then you can take it outside to explore.
