Breeding Folded Ear Cats Must Pay Attention to Hereditary Diseases
Folded Ear Cat
Besides hereditary skeletal diseases, folded ear cats commonly have the following ailments:
1. Respiratory System Problems
The gene causing skeletal abnormalities not only affects the bones of the limbs but also causes abnormal development of cartilage tissues in other parts of the body. More common is narrowing of the respiratory tract leading to breathing difficulties; severe cases require surgery to widen the airway. Additionally, nasal bleeding occurs,
but the cause is currently unclear and there is no treatment method.
2. Weaker Constitution
Affected cats have a body size and weight only two-thirds that of normal cats and are more susceptible to distemper, skin diseases, allergies, and other issues.
3. Heart Disease
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is also common in folded ear cats, but it is generally hard to detect until symptoms appear, posing a life-threatening risk. Cats require controlled diets and lifelong medication.
