What to Do When Being Chased by a Dog
Dalmatian (detailed introduction)
Sometimes when we ride a bicycle past a dog, we may be wildly chased by the dog. The faster we ride, the more closely the dog will chase us. This situation frustrates many people. So, what should you do when being chased by a dog, and how can you effectively improve this problem? Let's discuss.
When encountering an unfamiliar dog outdoors or on the road, do not rush to play with the dog. Avoid running quickly toward the dog to prevent misunderstanding; if the dog approaches you, it's best to remain still and allow the dog to sniff you, and you can speak softly to the dog. If the dog seems friendly, you may gradually pet it while talking to the owner. If the dog shows unwillingness, it's better to give up playing with it and slowly walk away. But never run away, as this will excite the dog and is quite dangerous.
If you happen to encounter a stray dog or are chased by a dog on the road, you should immediately stop and stand still, and be careful not to block the dog's escape route. Try to avoid shouting loudly and do not panic and run away. If necessary, make a bending down motion as if picking something up from the ground, which can effectively prevent the dog from approaching. Especially when the dog is large or aggressive, do not be fearful, and never run away, as that will likely cause the dog to pounce on you.
Dogs love to chase fast-moving objects, so when a dog chases you, do not run faster, or it might trigger a more intense reaction. We should stay calm, and even squat down so the dog feels we have no hostility. During this process, do not stare directly at the dog, as this can be seen as provocation.
