Newborn puppies and adult dogs should receive urination and defecation training when they come to a new environment. You can choose areas at home that are easier to clean, such as the bathroom or balcony. If you find the pet dog sniffing around the floor indoors, hiding under the bed, circling a spot, twisting its hips, lowering its back and standing still, or about to lift its hind leg, these are signs the dog is about to urinate or defecate. You should immediately stop this bad habit of soiling anywhere, take it to a fixed place to relieve itself, and lightly pat the dog's head as a reward.

When first training puppies to urinate and defecate, do not immediately remove the newspaper that has been soiled after the puppy has successfully relieved itself. This helps the puppy remember by scent and learn faster.

Train daily at the same time, and eventually, the pet dog will urinate and defecate at fixed times. Additionally, using a prompting spray is one of the simplest training methods.

A prompting spray is a spray commonly used to train dogs to urinate or defecate in fixed locations. It is developed based on the dog's instinct to eliminate where it smells the same scent. Simply spray it on the newspaper when in use.

When you notice the dog intends to urinate or defecate, do not disturb it physically but offer verbal encouragement immediately, such as "Good boy" or "Well done."

After the dog finishes relieving itself, also give hugs, petting, and other encouragement. The purpose is to make the dog like it and be willing to repeat urinating or defecating there to receive these rewards. When the dog can consciously urinate and defecate on the newspaper, you can gradually reduce the amount of newspaper until the dog accurately uses the newspaper even if it is spread out excessively—you have succeeded.

2. Training puppies to use indoor potty pans

The potty pan should be heavy enough to avoid accidental tipping by the puppy. During training, ensure the puppy does not urinate outside the pan. If your home has a squat toilet, you can also use it for training. When no one is home, do not close the bathroom door tightly; leave a gap for the puppy to freely enter and exit so it can defecate successfully in the potty pan.
