What to Do If a Dog Gets a Fishbone Stuck
Bull Terrier (detailed introduction)

Fish meat is very helpful for a dog’s brain, so some owners feed their dogs fish meat alongside dog food. Properly feeding some fish meat does have certain benefits for dogs, but you must be careful to completely remove fish bones to avoid getting a fishbone stuck. However, no matter how careful you are, accidents happen and sometimes fishbones might be fed to them by mistake. So, what should you do if a dog gets a fishbone stuck?

For relatively small fishbones, dogs can usually swallow them naturally along with food. If the bone has not been swallowed after a long time, the owner can shine a flashlight into the throat, press down the back of the tongue gently with a small spoon, and carefully check the pharynx. If the fishbone is small and not stuck deeply, it's best to use long tweezers to remove it.

For larger and more deeply stuck fishbones that cannot be removed by swallowing, dog owners need to observe their dog’s expression. If the dog’s pain does not subside, and after inspection the fishbone cannot be seen around the entrance of the throat, it is best to take the dog to the hospital. With the help of a veterinarian, the fishbone can be removed safely. Do not blindly attempt treatment yourself to avoid making the situation worse. When a fishbone is stuck in a dog's throat, the owner must never let the dog try to dislodge it by swallowing food because a large amount of food will not remove the fishbone but can push it deeper, making it harder to remove and possibly causing serious infection and inflammation in the dog.

What to do if a dog gets a fishbone stuck? For smaller fishbones, we can generally help remove them ourselves. If it’s a large fishbone stuck deep inside, it’s best to take the dog to a hospital for treatment. Avoid letting the dog swallow or self-treat to prevent damage to the throat.
