What Reactions Do Dogs Have When Looking in the Mirror
Corgi

Have you ever let your dog look in the mirror at home? Each dog has different reactions. The dog in my home shows no reaction at all when seeing itself in the mirror. What does your dog do?
Generally, many animals show hostility when they see themselves in the mirror. Dogs are no exception; they often bare their teeth and take an aggressive stance towards their reflection. Over time, this hostility usually decreases.
Some dogs, after seeing themselves in the mirror, think it's a new friend and will play with their reflection. They excitedly dart back and forth, howl softly at the mirror, then quickly run away and come back again. They keep repeating this running and playing until they get tired and quietly lie down, or they might get close to the mirror and try to scratch the reflection with their paw or sniff it with their nose.
There are also dogs that narcissistically look at themselves in the mirror, curiously studying their reflection seriously. Sometimes they quietly lie in front of the mirror and watch for a long time without understanding. Occasionally, dogs might even try to go around behind the "dog in the mirror," though each attempt is unsuccessful of course.
