        It is difficult to conclude how strong a dog's memory is, because dogs have strong memory in some aspects, such as recognizing routes, but their memory can seem poor in other areas. This issue may relate to the types of memory dogs use. So, what kinds of memory do dogs have? Let's briefly discuss this.

        Dogs remember clearly the paths they have taken, people and things they are interested in, and mechanical stimuli. Research shows dogs have three types of memory.

        1. Mechanical memory: an innate ability of dogs that allows them to conserve energy by effectively and mechanically repeating past activities.

        2. Emotional memory: dogs repeat previous psychological states under specific conditions; for example, a hunting dog displays excitement when seeing its owner holding a gun.

        3. Associative memory: an extremely important form of memory for dogs, without which much training would be impossible. However, some associations are beneficial while others are harmful. For example, in dog training, if the command "sit" and "lie down" are always spaced by 5 seconds, the dog’s association is no longer with the command but with the time interval; after 5 seconds, the dog will automatically change posture. Smarter dogs are more prone to forming bad associations, so it is important to prevent negative associations during training.
