Top Ten Food Killers for Dogs

Dogs have a different body structure from humans, and there are 10 types of food that are extremely deadly to dogs. For example, chocolate, onions, and sweets. Below PetsZone will introduce these 10 foods in detail:

First: Chocolate. Chocolate contains caffeine and a substance called theobromine, which greatly harm a dog's heart and central nervous system. Dogs eating excessive amounts of these substances can easily get poisoned and die.

Second: Onion. Contains sulfur, which destroys red blood cells in dogs causing anemia. Onion is highly toxic to dogs; excessive consumption can cause acute anemia and even be life-threatening.

Third: Milk. Although milk has high nutritional value, dogs lack the enzyme to properly digest and absorb it. Some dogs may develop diarrhea; feed with caution. (However, dog milk is fine because it’s completely different from cow’s milk: dog milk contains high protein, high fat, and low lactose, while cow’s milk contains low protein, low fat, and high lactose. Puppies’ digestive systems cannot absorb and digest cow’s milk and it may instead cause diarrhea, so give sparingly.)

Fourth: Sweets. Long-term consumption of sweet foods, such as drinks and desserts, can easily cause dogs to develop diabetes and obesity.

Fifth: Sticky foods. Such as rice cakes and sticky rice dumplings. Dogs generally do not chew carefully but bite the food into chunks to swallow. Sticky foods may cling to the esophagus during swallowing and cause choking or death. Sticky foods like rice cakes and sticky rice dumplings must not be fed to dogs. Many dogs have had surgeries due to eating sticky rice dumplings during Dragon Boat Festival, so please be careful.

Sixth: Seafood. Especially shrimp and crab, which can easily cause dogs diarrhea and parasitic infections.

Seventh: High salt foods. Salt or salted foods such as salted fish, cured meat, ham, and bacon are very unhealthy for dogs. Dogs need very little salt; if humans can taste saltiness, it means the salt is already excessive. Excessive salt intake by dogs can lead to poisoning.

Eighth: High fat foods. Greasy foods contain high fat that may cause obesity and life-threatening pancreatitis in dogs. Also, once dogs get used to strong-tasting food, their taste preferences become heavier, forming bad habits of picky eating.

Ninth: Chicken bones. Chicken bones are small and sharp and can splinter into pointed shards, injuring dogs’ mouths and intestines.

Tenth: Expired foods. These foods have started to mold, and eating them can cause muscle spasms, atrophy, and eventually death in dogs. Also, prevent dogs from scavenging garbage bags for food.
