Symptoms of Heatstroke in Pet Dogs
1. Judging Heatstroke by Behavior: Most dogs panting heavily will regain energy after drinking some water and resting in a cool place. However, when they overheat, heatstroke symptoms appear. When a dog shows rapid panting, restlessness, excessive barking, and drooling, it already indicates heatstroke. Then the dog may have difficulty breathing, lift its head and stretch its neck to breathe, or have a blank gaze. If not treated properly at this stage, the dog can go into shock, coma, and eventually die. 2. Other Ways to Assess Dog Heatstroke: To determine whether a dog has heatstroke, besides judging by its external behavior and reactions, owners can also assess by touching or observing. For example, checking if the pet is in a stuffy, high-temperature environment, or if its body temperature is much higher than usual. Or by observing the pet’s hairless belly area to see if the skin shows redness, spots, or bruises; these may be signs of heatstroke. TIPS: If the dog can drink water whenever it wants, it greatly reduces the risk of heatstroke. However, dogs sometimes forget to drink because they are too excited playing, so owners must remember to calm the dog down and give it enough water to meet its bodily needs.
