Some Misconceptions About Poodles
A dog’s eyes are not necessarily better the bigger they are

Poodles (detailed introduction) can be said to be one of the most popular pet dogs today. However, even so, whether one already keeps poodles or not, some friends may still not understand poodles very well. Moreover, there may still be certain misconceptions regarding the understanding of poodles.

1. Face Shape

Nowadays, most people use terms like apple face and short snout as the market’s descriptions when selecting poodles, and these have strangely become a kind of standard. It seems that only poodles like this can be trimmed into a cute teddy style. First of all, to talk about the poodle standard, the face shape standard requires the face to be slender and elegant. By slender here, most owners who do not understand poodles will imagine a very long face, but actually not. There are standards for larger body sizes, and correspondingly, there are smaller standards for small body sizes. Proportion is very important and it should be one-to-one with the skull. Such a poodle shaved on the face looks noble and elegant. Some people may not accept the poodle trim style, but think carefully, only a face that meets the standard can support more hair and gives more possibilities for the teddy trim style.

2. Eyes

When choosing a dog, we usually pick those with big eyes and tend to think the bigger the better. But for poodles, almond-shaped eyes that are clever and delicate are preferred. Such poodles, kept in show style, can best display a sense of dignity, decorum, and nobility. However, within the standard range, slightly larger eyes are allowed, but those very big and round eyes appearing in traditional poodle styles are not very aesthetic. From a health perspective, they can cause many eye problems. Visually, eyes that are too big, round, and protruding lack liveliness and the sense of nobility. Therefore, moderation and standards are important.

3. Ears

Due to the internet, some owners who see cute dog photos online feel some upright-eared dogs are very cute, so they also request upright ears for their poodles. But returning to the standard, the long-haired ears of poodles are a major feature, and the ear position should be parallel with the eye line. Upright ears result from ears being too thin and ear placement too high, which is a defect. So it is best not to choose poodles with upright ears, even if they look cuter.

4. Leg Length

Everyone certainly knows that bench legs do not meet the standard, but this also leads to another extreme. Many owners, hearing that bench legs are bad, stubbornly believe that the longer the legs the better, even that the legs being longer than the body length means a quality dog. This is an extreme misconception. According to poodle standards, square bodies are beautiful. If you have seen poodles in competitions, you will find that square poodles have a larger and freer gait and more beautiful movement. But think about it, if the legs are longer than the body length, how can the dog take big steps and run well? Therefore, legs that are too long are also a defect.

5. Body Size

Nowadays, most people believe that poodles in teacup and micro-teacup sizes are the best, and mini or standard sizes are less valuable. First, referring back to the standards, poodles only have three accepted size types: toy, mini, and standard. Small fluctuations within the standard height range are acceptable. These standard internationally recognized poodles are breeds developed through hundreds of years of breeding, with stable appearance and health. However, the domestic market now has a craze for demand leading to mass rapid production of ultra-small poodles. Regardless of standard conformity, from a health perspective, there are considerable hidden risks. Not to mention various hereditary diseases, the breeding practice alone driven by market demand causes many extremely small dogs to require caesarean section instead of natural birth, which violates the principle of healthy dog raising. These ultra-small types, which cannot even reach standards and have many health risks, are more likely to affect the dog's future life. Therefore, it is better not to blindly pursue novelty.
