Some Key Points for Exercising with Dogs
Pet dogs are different from stray dogs and free-range dogs; their living space is limited. If they are usually kept at home, there is basically no space for them to get adequate exercise. Therefore, as the owner, you must take your dog outside so they can get enough exercise to maintain both physical and mental health. However, there are some key points you must always remember during exercise.
1. Appropriate exercise should be done daily. It should not depend solely on the owner’s will, going out several times a day one moment and only once every few days when busy. The amount of exercise should vary according to the dog’s breed, age, and individual differences. For example, small dogs should exercise 3–4 kilometers daily, while fast-paced hunting dogs should run about 16 kilometers per day. Some small dogs may suffer heart issues if over-exercised. On the other hand, some small breeds, such as terriers and mini pinschers, are very lively and their exercise amount should be increased appropriately. Some hunting dogs should run for more than 15 minutes daily.
2. Use a leash and bring enough clean drinking water. The leash should neither be too tight nor too loose; too tight will discomfort the dog and affect its breathing, too loose may cause the dog to slip out. A certain degree of freedom is ideal. Especially on city streets, do not neglect a loose leash as it can cause traffic accidents or fights with other dogs. Pay special attention to preventing biting injuries to pedestrians.
3. In a safe environment, you may give your dog some plastic or rubber toys to play and run freely by themselves. Hunting dogs can play games like frisbee with their owners.
4. Frequently change exercise routes; do not always stick to the same fixed route every day. Avoid overly close contact with other dogs to prevent the transmission of certain diseases.
5. For working dogs like hunting or police dogs, swimming exercises in summer are excellent full-body workouts that help develop a well-proportioned physique.
6. After exercise, do not feed or bathe the dog immediately. You can use a towel to dry the whole body and brush off dust.
There are many kinds of dog exercise. Owners can choose different exercises according to their dog’s personality to maintain a healthy body.
