Precautions for Dog Cesarean Section
Teddy Dog (Detailed Introduction)
Because nowadays dogs are generally pampered, their physical condition is relatively poor. Therefore, natural delivery may be difficult for some dogs, so some owners choose cesarean section for the safety of the dog and puppies. Of course, there are many precautions to take when performing a cesarean on a dog. Next, let's learn about the precautions for dog cesarean section.
1. Do not feed the dog anything within 12 hours before surgery because anesthesia is required during the operation. If the dog eats and vomits, it may obstruct breathing and cause life-threatening risks.
2. During surgery, we mostly use supine restraint and also employ suture restraint for the dog while fixing its head. The anesthesia effect should not be enhanced simply by increasing the dosage of anesthetics; instead, it should be improved by strengthening restraint and other measures. Increasing the dosage of some drugs does not improve anesthesia depth effectively but rather prolongs anesthesia and recovery time.
3. After the cesarean section, if the dog wakes up, can stand and walk, and is in good mental condition, only routine antibacterial, anti-inflammatory treatment and care are needed. If anesthesia is too deep or recovery time is long, a wake-up agent should be injected. For severe cases, cardiac stimulants and fluid therapy are necessary. For dogs with poor constitution, prolonged dystocia, uterine contraction relaxation, tissue necrosis inside the uterus, especially when fetus and placental decay produces a large amount of gas, septicemia and shock should be prevented. This can be done with a small amount of labor-inducing drugs combined with infusion, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, acid-base and electrolyte balance regulation, and shock prevention.
Generally, female dogs after cesarean surgery need intravenous fluids for 3 days for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory treatment, and their wound healing should be observed. Iodine tincture should be applied to the wound daily until the wound is fully healed.
