Little Knowledge About Female Dog's Physiological Period

During the process of raising dogs, it is inevitable to encounter some issues that leave owners with partial understanding, such as matters related to the female dog's physiological period. Many people do not realize that dogs have menstrual cycles, and misconceptions can cause certain health problems for the dog, especially during these special periods. Generally, a dog will have its first estrus around eight months after birth, followed by one every six months. Of course, the cycle also greatly depends on the dog's own physical condition.

  1. Phenomena of the Dog's Physiological Period

Generally speaking, when a female dog is in heat, there will be a blood discharge similar to menstruation from the vulva, which will appear more swollen and red compared to the resting phase. In some dogs, the area between the anus and vulva (vaginal part) will also swell. At this time, the dog may feel swelling and damp discomfort in the vulva, and most dogs will lick the vulva vigorously to clean the blood released during the physiological period.

 2. Behavioral Performance During the Dog's Physiological Period

Behaviorally, besides licking the vulva, attentive owners will notice their dogs becoming more anxious, wanting to go out, enjoying gentle petting, and becoming clingier. In addition, in terms of eating habits, female dogs may eat their food in portions; while male dogs, when seeing a female in heat, will display a greedy expression and behavior similar to a soldier seeing a beauty.

  3. Cycle of the Dog's Physiological Period

A female dog's heat period lasts about fourteen days and occurs approximately every six months. The first heat typically begins between four months old and a little over one year old. However, dogs' physical conditions vary; some dogs may have a longer period by a few days. The dog's discharge is drop by drop. If your dog is a small breed, the volume of discharge will not be much; larger dogs will have a bit more, which can be difficult to notice if the owner is not attentive. If you do not want your dog's discharge to stain your home, you can buy special dog sanitary pants at pet stores and replace the small pads inside with human sanitary pads.

Additionally, during the physiological period, the dog's vulva will swell, causing discomfort and continuous licking. It is recommended to use warm water to wipe it, which will make the dog feel more comfortable and prevent constant restless movements.

 4. Precautions During the Dog's Physiological Period

Similar to humans, the immune resistance of puppies decreases and appetite declines during menstruation. At this time, we should pay attention to the following:

  1. Keep the puppy warm and avoid catching a cold, especially in winter.

  2. Since the menstruation period is prolonged, like humans, the puppy needs nutritional supplementation, especially iron-rich foods.

  3. Maintain cleanliness to prevent reproductive system infections. You can clean the dog daily with warm water.

  4. Try to avoid intense exercise and do not feed spicy or stimulating food.

  5. It is best not to vaccinate during the dog’s menstrual period, as the dog's resistance is weaker during special periods.

  6. Avoid taking the dog outside during the physiological period to prevent unexpected pregnancies.

  7. Try not to bathe the dog during the physiological period; if going out, it is best to wear sanitary pants.
